Thanks for taking time to learn about this company. The following
comments are meant to introduce you to the company and its core values. I've taken the liberty of writing this
page in first person because I think it's the best way to express the series of events that ultimately resulted
in taylor28design LLC.
I founded taylor28design LLC in 2002. I was working for
a commercial A|E (Architecture and Engineering) firm ranked among the world's ten largest firms. I was tremendously
fortunate to work with talented and dedicated people, whom I considered friends and mentors. I was also
fortunate to work on a range of building types that many practitioners wouldn't have an opportunity to consider.
Despite the opportunities I enjoyed, I noticed that I was spending
less and less time actually drawing and making decisions about the physical building. To me, my work was
becoming more managerial and less architecture. One of my mentors best expressed this notion when he suggested
that the reward of the smaller project, particularly single-family residential work, is opportunity to build a
meaningful and productive relationship with the people who will be using the building each day.
On many large commercial projects, this connection is often obscured
by a layer of representatives, managers and consultants working on behalf of the owner. Smaller projects
frequently offer the benefit of smaller project teams which, in turn, allow a much stronger relationship
between the architect and owner. For me, this meant trading the reward of producing acclaimed work (commercial
projects) for the reward of producing work that specifically addresses the needs of the user(s).
I founded this company on that premise. taylor28design LLC is
committed to advancing the practice of architecture by sharing vision, process and technology with our
community. I encourage you to explore this site for examples. You'll find an offering of
services, articles and continuing education opportunities intended to realize this commitment.
I also encourage you to use the contact information if you have
any questions, comments or suggestions. For example, you might ask why this company has such a funny (meaning
ridiculous) name. Also, please forward requests for information, war stories and frustrations with the
industry so that these comments may contribute toward the development of the articles offered on this web site.
Good architecture is only possible through the efforts of a team of
people. I'm thankful for all the teams I've been a part of and I look forward to establishing many new
relationships.
THANKS,
Ryan Taylor, AIA
